Academic Leadership and Innovation in Rabbit Genetics: Profiling Professor Ioan Valentin Petrescu-Mag
Professor Ioan Valentin Petrescu-Mag, PhD, Habil. (CS I) is a Romanian academic, researcher, and scientific innovator with an extensive and multidisciplinary career spanning genetics, ecotoxicology, aquaculture, and cuniculture. Born on January 22, 1979, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, he has developed a distinguished profile combining high-level academic achievement, scientific research excellence, and applied innovation in animal breeding and environmental sciences.
He graduated in Biology from the Babeș-Bolyai University, followed by a Master’s degree in Cellular Biotransformations and a PhD in Genetics, with a research focus on sex determination and color genetics in model organisms, particularly Poecilia reticulata. His doctoral work contributed to understanding reproductive control and sex ratio manipulation, establishing a strong foundation in experimental genetics and applied biotechnology. He further expanded his expertise through postdoctoral research in ecotoxicology, focusing on endocrine-disrupting pollutants and their biological impacts, as well as through additional academic training in information sciences and agronomy-related domains.
Professor Petrescu-Mag currently holds the position of full professor (habilitated) in ecotoxicology and environmental sciences, with nearly two decades of academic experience. He is also a PhD supervisor in agronomy, actively contributing to the development of new generations of researchers. His academic trajectory reflects sustained advancement through all ranks of higher education, alongside recognition as a Scientific Researcher Grade I (CS I), the highest professional rank in Romanian research.
His scientific output is substantial and diverse, comprising over 350 published works, including books, monographs, university courses, and peer-reviewed articles. Among these are dozens of papers indexed in international databases, including Web of Science Core Collection. He is the author or co-author of 20 books and teaching materials, many of which address ecotoxicology, environmental policy, aquaculture, and animal breeding. His research integrates classical genetics with modern approaches in environmental biology, addressing issues such as pollutant bioaccumulation, genotype–environment interactions, and sustainable agricultural practices.
A defining dimension of his career is his contribution to applied genetics and animal breeding, particularly in cuniculture. Professor Petrescu-Mag is the principal creator of the Transylvanian Giant rabbit, the first officially recognized Romanian rabbit breed, homologated at national level and acknowledged internationally. In addition, he contributed to the development and standardization of two other breeds: the Cluj Rabbit and the Szekler Rabbit. These achievements represent a significant advancement in the conservation and development of genetic resources in domestic animals, combining scientific rigor with practical breeding innovation.
His work in this field has also been recognized at the highest competitive levels. He has obtained two European Champion titles in cuniculture, awarded at major European exhibitions of small animals, including events held in Leipzig (Germany) and Metz (France). These distinctions confirm not only scientific expertise but also excellence in applied breeding, phenotype stabilization, and genetic selection.
In parallel, Professor Petrescu-Mag has demonstrated strong managerial and leadership capabilities. He has coordinated numerous national and international research projects (including CNCSIS, CEEX, and PNII programs), acting both as project director and senior researcher. His managerial experience extends to the coordination of research structures and interdisciplinary teams, as well as to strategic involvement in research evaluation programs (e.g., national and European expert evaluator roles such as COST and ERA-NET).
His innovative activity is further evidenced by three inventions, including two national patents and one internationally recognized innovation indexed in Derwent Innovation. These inventions, primarily in the field of applied genetics and aquaculture biotechnology, have been awarded multiple medals (gold, silver, and bronze) at international salons of invention and innovation.
Professor Petrescu-Mag’s scientific excellence has been acknowledged through prestigious awards, including the “Virgil Gligor” Prize of the Academy of Romanian Scientists for contributions to agricultural sciences, as well as multiple distinctions for research performance and innovation. His work has also been recognized through national programs rewarding high-impact scientific publications.
His research interests converge at the interface of genetics, environmental science, and animal production systems, with particular emphasis on:
-
genetic mechanisms of sex determination and phenotypic expression,
-
ecotoxicological impacts of pollutants and endocrine disruptors,
-
conservation and valorization of animal genetic resources,
-
sustainable cuniculture and small-scale animal production systems.
In addition to his research and teaching activities, he has been actively involved in scientific communities and professional organizations, contributing to standardization processes, breeder associations, and interdisciplinary collaborations. His role as Honorary President of the Transylvanian Giant Rabbit Breeders Club reflects both scientific authority and community leadership in the field.
Overall, Professor Ioan Valentin Petrescu-Mag represents a complex academic profile defined by scientific productivity, innovation in animal genetics, excellence in teaching and mentorship, and sustained contributions to both fundamental and applied research, particularly in the domains of genetics and cuniculture.
